Scope and Contents

The Danny Lyon collection (1969-1985) consists of one series, Films by Danny Lyon, containing six 16mm films by Danny Lyon and one empty reel, all housed in film reel canisters. These films were created during the 1970s and 1980s when Lyon made a series of non-fiction films whose subjects include marginalized groups and individuals existing on the fringes of society. These films were recently digitized and are available to watch through Lyon’s website.

The bulk of this collection documents her activities as a photographer, teacher, researcher, and social critic during the period from 1945 to 1978. There is little documentation of her first career in Germany as an actress, model, and dancer. Documents and work prints related to the photographer, Melissa Shook’s “Streets Are for Nobody” series which chronicles the life of homeless women. Included are unedited transcripts of interviews conducted by Shook, as well as work prints from the series.
