Scope and Contents
Papers and photographic materials of Grey Silva (1911-1997), photographer. Silva was a student and friend of William Mortensen. Some of the materials in this collection were given by William Mortensen to Silva. Included are negatives and contact prints of both Silva and Mortensen, correspondence, personal papers, and publications by Mortensen. The CCP print collection includes approximately 400 fine prints acquired at the same time.

Biographical Note
Grey Silva was born July 23, 1911 and died May 1, 1997. His interest in photography began in 1957, during which he studied with Pictorialist photographer and developer of the Metalchrome technique to color black and white photographs. Silva lived in San Diego, California but regularly commuted to Laguna Beach to study with Mortensen until Mortensen’s death in 1965. Silva was an active member of the Photographic Society of America.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The Grey Silva Collection was acquired from the Silva family in 1998.
Separated Materials
Approximately 400 fine prints by Grey Silva and William Mortensen have been transferred to the Center for Creative Photography fine prints collection.
