Scope and Contents

The Etherton Gallery archive is divided into two series: Terry Etherton records and Etherton Gallery records. Each series is subsequently divided into subseries

Terry Etherton Records (n.d. 1925, 1981-1995) contains the subseries for Correspondence and Postcard Collection. An index to selected correspondence is included for more detailed description of contents of the subseries.

Etherton Gallery Records (n.d., 1940, 1976, 1979-2015) contains the subseries Artist Files, Publicity & Publications, Business Files, and Photographic Materials. The bulk of the collection lies within the Artist Files, containing correspondence, sales, examples of work, and clippings from publication write-ups. The Publicity & Publications subseries contains write-ups on the gallery’s exhibitions, published advertisements, and various books of represented artists’ works. The Business Files subseries contains financial records, history of the gallery, installation photos and slides, exhibition announcements, and conference materials. The Photographic Materials subseries contains transparencies and negatives documenting the gallery space, and portraits of Terry Etherton at various points during his life.

During processing brackets where placed around folder titles given by the processor, whenever possible folder titles remained unchanged. Account numbers, credit card numbers, and social security numbers present in the collection have been marked out to preserve privacy. Discs of images are present in artist files and business files, but no other digital materials are represented.

Historical Note

Founded in 1981, Etherton Gallery specializes in 19th, 20th Century and Contemporary Fine Art Photography. The gallery is known for its extensive inventory of photography and its museum quality exhibitions, featuring the work of photographers including Timothy O’Sullivan, Edward Curtis, Harry Callahan, Danny Lyon, Ralph Gibson, Frederick Sommer and many others. Ranging from vintage albumen landscape prints to classic black and white gelatin silver photographs and new color processes, the history of photography is always evident in the gallery’s holdings.

Etherton Gallery is a member of AIPAD, The Association of International Photography Art Dealers. Terry Etherton is an accredited member of the American Society of Appraisers, and is available for appraisals, absentee bidding for clients, and collections consultation for new collectors and corporations. The gallery regularly exhibits at internationally renowned art fairs such as The AIPAD Photography Show New York, Classic Photographs Los Angeles, Paris Photo LA and Art Basel Miami.

Abstract

Papers documenting the Etherton Gallery founded by photographer Terry Etherton (1951- ) in Tucson, Arizona in 1981. The collection includes correspondence, financial records, and exhibition records. The bulk of the collection consists of artist files containing resumes; business cards; exhibition announcements, brochures, reviews, and catalogues; slide/print/Polaroid/Xerox representations of work; clippings; articles; press releases; accounts receivable, consignment agreements; price lists; and insurance receipts. The collection contains a small amount of Terry Etherton’s personal correspondence relating to appraisals and requests to juror exhibitions.

Custodial History

Materials were donated by Terry Etherton, owner of Etherton Gallery in 2014. Accrual materials were received in 2018 and processed in 2019.
