Scope and Contents
The Laura Gilpin miscellaneous collection consists of photographs by Laura Gilpin. Three are black & white study prints by Gilpin: two of “Margaret Craver, 1946,” stamped on the verso "Photographed by Laura Gilpin;" one matted gelatin silver study print signed by Laura Gilpin, "Necklace by Margret Craver," not dated. Also in the collection are three undated color transparencies of New Mexican religious folk art made by Laura Gilpin 1959-1963. One of the slides has "New Mex" handwritten on it, another has "New Mex Museum" written on it.

Biographical Note
Laura Gilpin grew up in rural Colorado and received her first camera, a Kodak Brownie, for her twelfth birthday in 1903. She was educated at eastern boarding schools and on her first trip east she stopped in New York City to have her portrait taken by Gertrude Kasëbier, who later became her mentor and lifelong friend. She also studied photography at the Clarence White School. Gilpin is well known for her landscapes of the American West. She died in 1979.
