Scope and Contents

The Robert Fichter miscellaneous acquisitions collection is made up of two series, one gifted by Fichter in 1976 and the other gifted by Jerry Uelsmann in 1977. Series one contains mimeographed books, writings, correspondence, notes, and articles, while series two contains one mimeographed book and photocopies of the original publication.

Biographical Note

Robert Fichter was born in Florida in 1939 where he attended the University of Florida at Gainesville to study photography under Jerry Uelsmann. In 1966 he earned a Masters of Fine Arts from Indiana University and soon after moved to Rochester, NY to work under Nathan Lyons as an Assistant Curator at the George Eastman House. As a professor at UCLA Fichter taught well known photographers, such as Robert Heinecken and Todd Walker. He is best known for his experimental photography, including combining drawing with photography and antiquated developing processes.

Abstract

This collection contains miscellaneous materials, 1962-1974, documenting the life and career of Robert Fichter (1939- ), photographer. Each group of materials will be described separately. The collection consists mainly of mimeographed publications, copies of typescript writings, and research notes by Fichter. The collection is active.

Processing Information

The materials in series 1 and 2 were withdrawn from MISCELLANEOUS SMALL COLLECTIONS (AG 8, Subgroup 40) in June 1990 by Kristi Bradford.
