Series 1 contains information pertaining to the life and career of Willard Van Dyke (1906-1986), photographer, curator, teacher, and filmmaker. It includes correspondence, photographic materials, and writings.
Series 2 contains information pertaining to the life and career of W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978), photojournalist. It includes correspondence and writings.

Biographical Note
Born in 1909 in New Jersey, Ben Maddow was a writer, photography critic, and photo-historian. After retiring from writing screenplays for Hollywood films in 1971, Maddow became well-known for his writings on photography, which include a bibliography of Edward Weston titled Edward Weston: fifty years (1973), Faces: A Narrative History of the Portrait in Photography (1977), and The Photography of Max Yavno (1981). Maddow also served as editor and illustrator for W. Eugene Smith’s Let Truth be the Prejudice: W. Eugene Smith, His Life and Photographs (1985). Maddow died in Los Angeles in 1992.

This collection contains materials, 1942-1986, pertaining to the life and career of Ben Maddow (1909 - 1992), writer and photo-historian. Each group of materials will be described separately. The collection is active.

The Collection is arranged into the following series:
- Series 1: Willard Van Dyke biographical materials, 1942-1985, 3 folders
- Series 2: W. Eugene Smith biographical materials, 1971-1986, 2 folders
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Materials were acquired from Ben Maddow; materials in Series 1 were acquired from 1986-1988, materials in Series 2 were acquired from 1986-1987.
