Scope and Contents

The Mildred Mead collection is made up of five series including Biographical materials, Activity files, Exhibition files, Printed materials, and Photographic materials.

Series one, Biographical materials, contains Mead’s curriculum vitae, trophies won in photography contests, and newspaper articles related to Mead and her husband.

Series two, Activity files, includes research files on Maxwell Street, the Metropolitan Housing Council, the Hyde Park-Kenwood neighborhood, as well as a large amount of miscellaneous newspaper articles pertaining to poor Chicago housing.

Series three, Exhibition files, contains flyers, newspaper articles, and notes on multiple exhibitions of Mead’s photographs, as well as installation photographs from an unidentified show.

Series four, Printed materials, includes four books, four periodicals, and one exhibition catalog which is signed.

Series five, Photographic materials, includes three sets of study prints organized and titled by Mead’s original folders, and Xeroxed prints. One folder was labeled “To keep – mine” with a piece of paper in the folder that stated “duplicated – for me,” while the Xeroxed prints were in a folder labeled “Xerox – dupes.”

Biographical Note

Mildred Mead (1910-2001) was a resident of Hyde Park, Chicago and worked as a professional photographer in association with the Metropolitan Housing and Planning Council, the Chicago Land Clearance Commission, the Chicago Housing Authority, the South East Chicago Commission, the Hyde Park-Kenwood Community Conference, Michael Reese Hospital, the Fort Dearborn Project, the study of the Maxwell Street Market, the University of Chicago Planning Unit, and other entities associated with urban redevelopment. Mead photographically informed urban redevelopment reports by photographing areas of Chicago targeted for urban renewal, revealing poor housing conditions and overcrowding. She also photographed revitalized areas of Chicago, and other aspects of Chicagoan community life. Mead died in Arizona in 2001.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

This collection was a gift of the artist to the Center in 2000.

Related Materials

The Chicago History Museum has around 1000 prints and about 6000 negatives, and the University of Chicago Library has between 300 and 400 8 X 10 prints, as well as some slide transparencies, 1948-1959.
