Helen Gee / Limelight Gallery miscellaneous acquisitions collection

 Collection
Identifier: AG 248

Scope and Contents

This collection consists primarily of recordable CDs and DVDs that include high resolution digital copies of photographs by Frank Paulin relating to his interactions with Helen Gee and her photography gallery and coffee house, Limelight Gallery, in New York City during the 1950s.

The collection includes three (3) DVDs of images in high resolution TIFF format of the entire 1957 exhibition of 55 of Paulin’s photographs at Limelight Gallery. Images can be copied and printed up to 16x20 inches in measurement. A typed checklist of the 55 photographs, including title, measurements, and descriptions are listed on a document. The list reflects the order the prints were presented on the six (6) gallery walls. Final installation photographs, six (6) in total printed at 8x11, are included.

One (1) CDR includes a portrait of Lew Parrella and a portrait of Helen Gee, both taken in 1957.

One (1) CDR includes photographs of Lew Prarella in the process of preparing the Limelight Gallery space for Paulin’s 1957 exhibit, as well as process photographs of Parrella hanging the show. One (1) photo print displays a collection of process photographs, and one (1) print is a portrait of Parrella walking through the coffee house which was at the front of the gallery. Paulin and Parella were good friends at the time, and kept in touch after Parrella moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1961.

Two (2) DVDs containing digital files relating to Limelight Gallery exhibitions. Included on the disk are five subfolders labeled: (1) Lew’s (Parrella) notes on Village Voice Review of Frank’s exhibition, (2) Lew Hanging Show, (3) Limelight Invitation, (4) Installation Panels, (5) Helen Gee and Yan Gee folder. Included in subfolder #5 are portraits of Helen Gee and her husband Yan Gee, a painter.

One (1) photocopy of a November 9, 2001 article from the Chicago Sun-Times entitled “In the Limelight”. The article, by Margaret Hawkins, is regarding an exhibit of Helen Gee’s photograph collection on display at the Stephen Daiter Gallery in Chicago during the fall and winter of 2001. The article mentions Paulin’s work.
