Scope and Contents

The collection is divided into seven series: Correspondence; Biographic Materials; Activity Files; Writings and Interviews; Exhibition Files; Printed Materials; and Financial Records. Many series contain materials closely related to other series, appropriate directional notes have been included.

Correspondence, undated, 1972-1986, 2016-2017 is separated into 2 subseries: Business Correspondence, and Personal Correspondence. Business Correspondence relates to items in Series 3: Activity Files and Series 5: Exhibition Files. Cassette tapes in Series 3 Project Files, Subseries 3 NEA Fellowship relate to Personal Correspondence.

Biographical Materials, 1963, 1970-1971, 1982, 1985-1986, 1988-1989, 1991, 1993, 1996-1999, 2014-2015, 2017 is separated into 2 subseries: Biography & Other, and Resumes. Biography & Other Includes snapshots and shorthand instruction book from Murray’s time at Gregg Secretarial College, Dublin, 1965.

Activity Files, undated, 1978-1993, 1997-2015 is separated into 4 subseries: CCP, Dinnerware Gallery Files, and National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and Other. CCP includes promotional materials, publications, correspondence, and conference notes. Dinnerware Gallery Files includes minutes and business records. NEA Fellowship includes correspondence, financial records, writings, album of snapshots, and application materials. Other includes grant proposals, applications, and a USB drive of works. Relates to Series 5: Exhibition Files.

Writings and Interviews, undated, 1965-1967, 1969, 1982, 1985-1987, late 1990’s, 1997, 1999-2000, 2012 is separated into 2 subseries: Poetry and Prose, and Interviews. Material in Series 3: Activity Files Subseries 3: NEA Fellowship relate to this series.

Exhibition Files, 1979-1987, 1989, 1991-2000, [late 1990’s], 2007 is separated into 2 subseries: Etherton Gallery & Temple Gallery, and Other. Series 1 Correspondence, Series 3 Activity Files, and Series 6: Printed Materials relate to this series.

Printed Materials, undated, 1977, 1978-1996, 1999-2000, 2003, 2007 is separated into 3 subseries: Periodicals and Catalogues, Book Project Materials, and Reviews and Announcements. Includes publications with Murray’s photographs, proofs of book projects, reviews and exhibition announcements. Relates to Series 3 Activity Files and Series 5: Exhibition Files

Financial Records, 1978-1979, 1982-1995, 1997-2001, 2003-2005, 2016 relates to Series 3: Activity Files

Biographic Note

Frances Murray (1947- ) is a Tucson based photographer. Born in Ireland and an immigrant to the U.S., Murray’s career in photography began in her late twenties. After meeting in 1969, Murray married Harold Jones in 1970 and gave birth to twin daughters, Star and Rebecca, in 1971. The Frances Murray papers, 1963-2017 includes: exhibition records, grant application records, business and personal correspondence, lecture notes, personal photographs, periodicals, records from her involvement with Dinnerware Artists’ Cooperative, and records from the National Endowment for the Arts fellowship.

Abstract

Collection consists primarily of letters, financial records, exhibition announcements, grant materials, writings, publications, and snapshots. Slides, book projects, and digital materials are also represented. Materials present range from 1963-2017 with the majority of items from the late 1970’s into the 2010’s representing the most active time in Murray’s career.
