Scope and Contents

Series one is located in boxes one and two, and include interviews arranged alphabetically by interviewee. Series two consists of English translation of the texts on Dater in the book Cycles published by Kodansha in August 1992. These texts consist of: “Between Light and Dark” by Donna Stein, and “Dissonance” by Michiko Kasahara.

Biographical Note

Judy Dater was born in California in 1941 and grew up in Los Angeles. She attended both UCLA and San Francisco State University to study photography. She quickly became part of the community of the west coast school of photography, which included greats such as Ansel Adams and Imogen Cunningham. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and two National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grants.

Abstract

Materials related to the life and career of Judy Dater (1941 - ), photographer. Of note are photocopied typescripts of thirty eight interviews conducted for Dater’s book Imogen Cunningham: A Portrait, published in 1979.

The Collection is arranged into the following series:

Custodial History

The interviews were a gift from Judy Dater to the Center for Creative Photography in 1978.
