Scope and Contents

The Lucy Ashjian Collection consists of materials related to the Clarence H. White School of Photography. It includes a 4 ¾ x 6 ¼ in. class photograph from 1937, in which Ashjian is on the right in the middle line, eyes looking to viewer’s right, hair short, dark, page-boy style, next to young man leaning against building. There is also a June 1937 diploma signed by numerous people from the Clarence H. White School of Photography, New York City, as well as one signed 9 ½ x 12 in. envelope in which prints were kept, one page, front and back, of notes on photography subject documentation numbered 0-9., 19 2 ¼ x 2 ¼ in. contact prints of New York scenes with empty, but numbered negative sleeves, a 2-sided 11 x 14 in. exhibition sign stating “New York City in the 30s Photography by Lucy Ashjian”, 9 empty, signed mounts, and two modern test prints dated 2004 by R. Wagner of the NYPL and Bowery

Biographical Note

Lucy Ashjian was born in 1907 in Indianapolis and graduated from the Clarence H. White School of Photography in 1937. That same year she joined New York’s Photo League which included greats such as Lewis Hine, Paul Strand, and Berenice Abbott. Ashjian died in 1993 leaving behind a small amount of photographs and negatives.

Abstract

Photo League archival materials relating to the career of Lucy Ashjian (1907-1993), photographer. Includes contact prints from 2 ¼ inch contact prints, original negative sleeves, signed original mounts, an exhibition sign, class photo from the Clarence White School of Photography, 1937 diploma from the White School, and other miscellaneous items.

Custodial History

The materials in this collection began arriving as a gift of Gregor Ashjian Preston, son of the photographer, in 2005. The collection is active.
