Scope and Contents
This artificial collection contains materials related to the life and career of Edward Steichen (1879-1973). The items in this collection have been assembled from a number of different sources and do not constitute any part of the official Edward Steichen Archive.
Series one includes 205 slides of which 150 are aerial views taken during World War I and 26 are ground views of the war; the remaining 29 are commercial, portrait, and theatrical photographs made between 1920 and 1934. This series also includes Steichen’s aerial camera.
Series two contains a diary, pamphlets, and photographic materials, ca. 1930s - 1942, of Noel Deeks, who was a photographer and Edward Steichen’s printer. The photocopied diary, 1935-1942, of Noel Deeks covers personal life and daily activities while employed as a printer for Edward Steichen. Five pamphlets describe the uses of the Raylo Camera and Deeks’ Color sheets, early color processes invented by Hiram C. J. Deeks. Also included are two color transparencies of “The Swedish Lotus,” prints made by Hiram and Noel Deeks for Steichen; and thirteen copy prints made by the Center for Creative Photography staff of portraits of Steichen, the Deeks, and Steichen’s studio.
Series three includes the January 10, 1938 issue of Time: The Weekly Newsmagazine, which features the article “Forty Years of Steichen.”

Biographical Note
Edward Steichen was born on March 27, 1879 in Luxembourg where he lived until 1881 when his family immigrated to the United States. Originally trained as a painter, Steichen’s photographic works reflect this with their soft tones and lighting, key traits of the Photo-Secession Movement which he co-founded in 1902. Three years later Steichen opened the gallery known as 291 in New York City with Alfred Stieglitz. During World War I, Steichen was an aerial photographer and the director of photographic services for the United States Air Force. Upon his return from war he became chief photographer at Vogue, and later, in 1947, left his career to become the director of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art, a position he would hold until 1962. He died on March 25, 1973.
