Scope and Contents

The Gerald Ackerman Collection contains three series, biographical materials, photographic materials, and audiovisual materials, documenting the life and work of the artist.

Series one, biographical materials, includes a biography, credits, reviews, a letter to Ackerman from John Schaefer, Fresson and Platinum process information, and the envelope that these materials were originally housed in.

Series two, photographic materials, contains transparencies of flower photographs and their original sleeves and envelopes, 82 4x5-inch transparencies, a photocopy of Gerald Ackerman photographing orchids from 1988, and an album of gelatin silver prints entitled “Architectural Photographs – 16 N.Y.C.” This series also includes two albums, each housed in their own box, entitled “Volume I – Flower Slides” and “Volume II.”

Series three, audiovisual materials, includes one VHS tape, “Polarities… Stockholm...59 North..8/26B”, and two VHS Tapes, “University of Arizona, Center for Creative Photography ‘Polarities…Stockholm..59 North..8/26B’ Two Hour Loop From VHS Original/Audio EQed”.

Biographical Note

Well-known for his photographs of flowers, Gerald Ackerman posthumously published the book How Flowers Changed the World in 1996.

Abstract

Papers and photographic materials, circa 1980s- 1994, of Gerald Ackerman (1948-1994), photographer of dance and flowers. Includes biographical materials, black and white and color transparencies, 35 mm slides, 8 x 10 inch negatives, an album of black and white architectural photographs, a color portrait of the photographer, and a videotape of the dance performance “Polarities” along with viewing copies of the tape.

  3. Series 3: Audiovisual Materials (Box 1)

Custodial History

The collection was a gift of Doris T. Ackerman in 2000.

Seventeen of Ackerman’s photographs in the Fresson, platinum, and other processes are held in the Center’s print collection.
